"Fue un día de inmensa alegría" or "It was a day of great happiness" was the quote from a Santiago newspaper that expressed the joy shared around the world when the 33 Chilean miners were rescued on October 13th, 2010. The amazing event served as a design prompt for a class contribution to the Chilean Biennale. For my submission I sought to capture the story with custom created letter forms. For example "Fue" at the top of the design takes on an angelic appearance, watching over the rest of the words, just as the miners said they were being protected. "Dia" in the center has been made to reflect the Fenix II rescue capsule that was used to carry the men to the surface of the earth. "Inmensa" emerges from the ground... The design was made into several large cards to be given out at the event.
